The Fall of Troy

by Ross Coleman - Contributing Editor January 10, 2010 04:37

So I know I promised a defensive recruiting reset, but every day that I would sit down to work on it something would change. A commitment here or there, so I put it on the back burner.

Well I may have to rewrite the entire recruiting book starting today because USC head coach Pete Carroll, also know as; Enemy Number One, Cheaty Petey, and a dozen other expletive laden names, is leaving South Central to take over as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

This is not only huge news for USC but also the rest of the Pac-10.

Carroll leaves just as the NCAA hammer is starting to fall on the Trojan football program. Rumored sanctions are headed USC's way and it seems like Carroll knew that this was his best chance to get away with his record intact.

This is huge news for UCLA because a number of USC committed players picked USC over UCLA and with Carroll leaving, many of those players are expected to reopen their recruitment. With signing day three and a half weeks away it seems like UCLA stands in a good position to add some high profile recruits to the roster. Mainly Robert Woods, the number one rated wide receiver, and George Uko, a top rated defensive tackle.

If UCLA can come close to closing as strong in this recruiting cycle as they did last year, I think the UCLA giant will finally have awoken from its slumber.

In my opinion UCLA is close to being a major program even with Pete Carroll at USC. However, with his departure that moves up that timetable a year.

Mark my words, by 2012 UCLA will be the premiere football program in the Pac-10.

I close with my favorite image of Pete Carroll and one that I will always remember.
