Looking for Alumni Scholarship Volunteers

by Chris Worley - Membership Director February 24, 2010 23:48

For over 70 years, Alumni Scholarships have provided bright and deserving students with the financial assistance and incentives to attend UCLA.

Committees, near you, are looking for new volunteers for the Freshman and Ralph J. Bunche Scholarship Programs!  Alumni volunteers are integral to the selection.  As a volunteer, you would help directly determine which outstanding, local high school seniors will win between $4,000 - $17,500 in merit based scholarships.

Volunteers options/opportunities include:

  • Day #1: Paper Screening - Committees will convene to read and score applications.   Based on the average scores, your team will decide who to interview.

  • Day #2: Interview Day - Your team will interview each eligible candidate.  Interview scores will be combined with the paper screening scores.  You and your committee will determine who wins $4,000, and also who advances to the next (Area) level.

Most committees are paper screening and interviewing on the last two weekends in March. Any volunteers who wish to interview, must also paper screen the applications. Interviews are really fun because these students are so amazing! However, if you can only volunteer for one day, the District Chair in your area can find the right position for you.

Please contact Stephanie Brown at (408)730-1649 or StephanieBrown@UCLAlumni.net immediately and let her know where you reside so she can get you in touch with the appropriate District Chair.

We look forward to including you in the Alumni Association's #1-Rated Volunteer Experience!

Take our 2010 Events and Fundraisers Survey

by Chris Worley - Membership Director February 9, 2010 19:46

The Board has been busy getting ready for a great 2010. We are already planning our core events of Campus Connection, scholarship golf tournament, and bus trip to the UCLA v. Cal football game. Now, we want to know what other events or fundraisers you would be interested in seeing the Club organize. So, we have put together a quick survey that will take less than 5 minutes to complete.

Please take a moment to let us know is important to you. Complete the survey by February 28 and you will entered into a drawing for a FREE Club membership. If you are already a Club member (thank you!) then we will extend your membership by 12 months.

Serve on the Golf Tournament Committee

by Chris Worley - Membership Director January 27, 2010 19:52

When?  Monday, February 8, 2010; 7:00 PM
Where?  Pyramid Alehouse Brewery, K Street Mall

As most of you know, Chris Ochoa has served as the Director for our scholarship golf tournament for the last 12 years, since its inception. Understandably, he is looking to hand over the duties to someone else. Last year, the Board proposed taking a committee approach as to not burden any one person with all of the responsibility. This will be the first year to put this into practice. Below is a list of the roles we are still looking to fulfill.

This is one of our biggest and most important events of the year. We are seeking to raise $5,000 in scholarship monies for local Sacramento students heading to UCLA in the fall. If you can help in any way,

  • Tournament Chair - This is the person who keeps the committee on task, coordinates any meetings, and works to fill any gaps.

  • Raffle / Auction - This could be two positions. Someone needs to keep an inventory of all the items received, determine which prizes go into the raffle and which ones should be auctioned off, determines the starting auction price, and prints the auction sheets. Someone also needs to set up the raffle and auction tables on the day of the tournament, sell raffle tickets, and draw the raffle prizes.

  • Plaques - This year we would like to have plaques made as a thank you for our Shirt, Lunch, and Platinum sponsors. This person would order the plaques.

  • Sponsors - Someone needs to answer questions regarding our 6 sponsorship levels and track the sponsorships that do come in. Works closely with those responsible for the raffle, auction, and plaques.

  • Golfers / Check In - Someone needs to keep track of the golf registrations, put foursomes together if we have individual golfers, and check in the golfers the morning of the tournament.

The first meeting of the committee will be February 8 at Pyramid Alehouse downtown from 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. after the regular Board meeting.
